Take a class with me!
I currently offer a fun trio of cable knitting classes that are designed to build on each other. The first class, Cable Knitting 101, begins with the basics. In Next Level Cable Knitting, we add more complicated motifs and learn to read a chart. And the third class, Design Your Own Cable Chart, is a creative workshop that will encourage you to let your ideas flow. You can drop in and take the class appropriate for your learning level or you can take the entire series! More about each class is below with upcoming dates and locations.
1. Cable Knitting 101
Cable knitting is a classic technique that adds movement and texture to your pieces. It can look complicated, but it doesn’t have to be! In Cable Knitting 101, we’ll start with the basics and learn how cabling works, how to read a written pattern that includes cables, how to select suitable yarns, and we’ll also practice a lot of cable maneuvers. The project that we will work on in class is a narrow scarf that explores cabled ropes that twist in two directions and will serve as an excellent way to practice the technique.
Required Skills:
No cable knitting experience necessary, but this is an advanced beginner class, so participants should be comfortable with casting on/binding off, following a pattern, and knitting and purling on their own.
Upcoming Sessions:
Saturday, April 19th, 12:30pm-2:30pm at Knotty Lamb in Forest Grove, OR. REGISTER HERE.
2. Next Level Cable Knitting
Cable knitting charts can look intimidating! This class will help you take your cabling to the next level as we go beyond the basics to examine the mechanics behind the technique. We will look closely at cabling charts and learn how to read them by demystifying all those confusing symbols. Participants will also learn how to select yarn for cables that really sing, and even learn how to cable without a cabling needle. The project that we will work on in class is a narrow scarf that incorporates intertwined cabled ropes that are just intricate enough to keep you on your toes but still accessible to help you gain confidence with working from charts.
Required Skills:
This is an intermediate level class. Participants should already have some basic experience with cabling and should be comfortable with casting on/binding off, following a pattern, and knitting and purling on their own.
Upcoming Sessions:
Saturday, May 3rd, 12:30pm-2:30pm at Knotty Lamb in Forest Grove, OR. REGISTER HERE.
3. Design Your Own Cable Chart
Here we take a playful, puzzle-solving approach to designing your very own cabling creation that you can incorporate into your next project. We will talk about where to find inspiration, and we’ll also explore some common cable motifs and what to consider when mixing and matching different cable maneuvers.
Each participant will receive their very own, reusable charting kit (yours to keep!) to sketch out their cabling concept. We’ll move shapes and symbols around the page to see what works, and then we’ll use yarn and needles to see if the chart can be successfully knit up into a real fabric. Then it’s up to you to apply your design to whatever you like, whether that’s a scarf, a hat, or a sweater. And for those who want to take it to the next level, we’ll discuss some software options to expand your ideas.
Whether you are thinking about publishing a pattern or if you just want to play around with some new creative ideas, this class will set you up to thinking about cable charts in a fresh way!
