The scarf is worked flat, width-wise. The cast on edge is established using a provisional cast on which will be joined by a 3-needle bind off to close the loop of the scarf when it is complete. The motif is created using a series of 2/2 cable crosses that are combined with 2x2 ribbing, making an eye-catching, zig-zaggy texture. Slipped stitches on the right and left sides of the piece give the edges of the scarf a round, polished look. The main motif is both charted and shared as written instructions in this pattern.
Measurements
8.5”/21.5 cm wide and 49”/124.5 cm in circumference, after wet blocking.
Yarn
Upland Fiber Co. COR Fingering, 50% American Cormo / 50% American Corriedale (390 yds/100g per skein); approximately 620 yds/2 skeins. Shown in Pewter and Cayenne.
Needles
US 3 (3.25mm) straight or circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge; a specific cord or needle length isn’t crucial, but should be able to fit up to 8.5” of fabric comfortably.
You will also need two more needles for the 3-needle bind off at the end. One needle will be used to pick up the stitches from the provisional cast on; this needle can be the same size as the needle used in the main piece or it can be a size smaller. The needle that you use as the third needle for the bind off should be the same size as the needle used in the main piece.
Gauge
37 sts and 39 rows = 4”/10cm in pattern after blocking.
Tools
Cable needle; tapestry needle; waste yarn for the provisional cast on (this should be the same weight as your working yarn and should be a smooth fiber to reduce the chance of felting. You may also wish to use a contrast color to make it easier to see.).
